If January is steady, February is dry to the limit: rain this month is an exception rather than part of the routine. That removes the whole category of wet-season problems — no flooded junctions, no aquaplaning, no waiting out a squall in a car park — and leaves you with straightforward driving.
The problem moves to the car park
What replaces it is heat, and specifically heat in a stationary car. A vehicle left in open sun for two hours in February is unpleasant to get into and takes several minutes of air conditioning to become comfortable. The steering wheel is too hot to hold properly, the seatbelt buckle is worse, and anything left on the dashboard suffers.
There is a driving consequence too, which is that everyone is tired. Heat makes long days harder than they look, and the mistakes people make in February tend to happen in the late afternoon on the way back rather than in the morning on the way out. Build a break into any long route rather than pushing straight through.
What it means for the car
February heat works against a car in two ways. The first is the cabin, which reaches temperatures that are genuinely hard on electronics, plastics and anything you leave inside. Do not leave a phone, a camera or a pair of sunglasses on the dashboard, and do not leave a child or an animal in the car for any length of time at all.
The second is the mechanical load. The air conditioning runs at full output constantly, which means the compressor and the cooling system are working hard whenever the engine is on. Watch the temperature gauge in slow traffic, and check the coolant level at the start of a long day rather than after something goes wrong.
Tyre pressures also rise in this heat, which is normal and only matters if they were wrong to begin with. Check them cold in the morning, and if you are heading out on the highway for a long run, that five-minute stop at a fuel station is the most useful maintenance you will do all trip.

Covered garages at the shopping centres are the reliable option, and worth building into the day. Park there, do what you need to do, and come back to a car that is merely warm rather than an oven. On a long rental it also protects the interior from the constant sun that ages it.
Be a little careful about what you park under. Trees give shade and also drop sap, fruit and, in windy conditions, branches. A palm over a car park space is not the friend it appears to be, and coconuts are heavier than people intuitively expect.
Where to go in the driest month
February is the best month of the year for long day routes, because the weather simply does not interfere. A full loop of the island, the northern beaches, the temples inland, a mainland excursion — none of them carry any risk of being ruined halfway through by rain.
It is also the month for the unsurfaced tracks that are impassable half the year. Approaches to the quieter beaches are dry and firm, and a car with modest clearance manages roads that would be a bad idea in August. If a remote bay is on the list, this is when to do it.
The exception is anything involving fresh water. The waterfalls are at their weakest by February and some are barely running, so a trip planned around them will underwhelm. Spend the dry months on the coast, the viewpoints and the mainland, and save the waterfalls for the wet season.
Renting in February: what to ask in advance
Demand in February is high but no longer at the level of the holiday weeks, so there is more flexibility than in December. Even so, the popular classes go early, and leaving it until arrival narrows the choice to whatever nobody else wanted.
Ask specifically about the air conditioning when you book, and test it at idle at handover. In this month it is the single component that determines whether the car is pleasant or awful, and a system that only cools at speed is not acceptable for a February rental.
