The first half still feels like April; the second half is the wet season proper, and the change happens faster than most visitors expect.

How the road changes in May
The first half of May still resembles April: hot, mostly dry, with the occasional evening storm. The second half is a different month altogether, with the southwest monsoon established, rain arriving most days, and the sea on the west coast turning from flat to serious.
The transition is the risky part
The danger is not the volume of water; it is the first heavy rain landing on tarmac that has been dry for months. Oil, rubber and dust lift to the surface and grip disappears for the first quarter of an hour of a downpour. This is the most slippery driving on the island all year, and it happens in May more than in any other month.
After the road has been washed a few times, wet driving here becomes ordinary. The tarmac drains well on the main routes, the visibility during a squall is poor but the squall is brief, and the pattern becomes predictable enough to plan around within a week or two.
What it means for the car
Tyres become the main item. On a wet climb towards Kathu, or on the winding approach to any of the northern bays, tread depth is what keeps the car doing what you asked it to. A tyre that was adequate in the dry season is not automatically adequate now, so look at them properly at handover.
The second item is the wipers, which nobody thinks about until a squall arrives at speed on the highway. Blades that have baked through the dry season smear rather than clear, and smearing at exactly the moment visibility drops is genuinely dangerous. Test them with the washers before you drive away.
The third is a habit rather than a component: dry the brakes after standing water. A light press on the pedal for a second or two clears the film off the discs, and doing it as a reflex after every deep puddle means the brakes are always there when you need them properly.
TipIf a squall catches you on the road, pull off somewhere safe and wait it out rather than crawling through it with hazard lights on. Phuket's rain is intense and short, visibility during the worst of it is close to nothing, and the drivers still moving are the hazard. Fifteen minutes in a car park costs nothing and removes the whole problem.
Parking in the rainy season
The May rule is to look at the shape of the ground, not just at how close the space is to the door. Water finds the low point, and the low point of a car park is exactly where nobody wants to have left a vehicle when a heavy shower passes over.
Unsurfaced areas that were perfectly firm in April soften once the rain starts. A dirt car park at a beach or a viewpoint can hold a car easily in the morning and hold it in a different sense by the afternoon, so take the tarmac option when there is one.
Covered garages come back into their own this month, and they are empty compared with high season. Using one costs nothing and means you and the car both stay dry, which matters more than it sounds when the rain arrives at the moment you are loading shopping.
What to see in May
After the first rains the island turns green: the waterfalls start running, the rubber and palm plantations look their best, and the inland routes become worth doing for their own sake rather than as a way of getting somewhere. That transformation happens quickly, within a couple of weeks of the monsoon arriving.
The viewpoints are good this month too, for a slightly unexpected reason: the air after rain is clean, and the visibility from the southern viewpoints is better than in the hazy end of the dry season. Go when the sky clears after a shower rather than at a fixed time.
The coast is where to change plans. The west-coast beaches develop real currents once the monsoon sets in, and the warning flags are enforced. This is the month to shift from swimming to driving, eating and looking, or to move to the calmer east side and the piers.
Renting in May
Low season means the best choice and the most flexible terms of the year. May is a sensible month to take a car for longer than you originally planned, because the fleet is available and the arrangement over weeks works out differently from a few days.
It is also the month to spend a little more on ground clearance if the budget allows. Water on the roads, soft unsurfaced parking and the occasional flooded dip all become easier in a slightly taller car, and the price difference in low season is smaller than in December.
