How Early to Leave for Phuket Airport by Car
How early you leave for Phuket Airport depends on where you are staying: in calm traffic Bang Tao is about 25 min from the terminal, Kamala 30–35, Patong 40–45, Karon 45–50 and Kata about 50. Add a margin for rush hour and heavy rain, then the car return inspection, then your airline's check-in. From the south of the island the airport run is the longest drive of the holiday, and at peak hours the calm-traffic times stop being true.

How long is the drive to Phuket Airport from each area?
The airport is in the far north of Phuket, so the answer grows the further south you are staying.
In calm traffic: Nai Yang is minutes away, right next to the terminal. Laguna is about twenty minutes, Bang Tao about 25. Kamala takes 30 to 35 on the 4025, and Chalong about 30 on the direct highway. Patong is 40 to 45 on the west road, Rawai about 45 on the east road, Karon 45 to 50 through Chalong, and Kata about 50. Phuket Old Town is around forty minutes up Thepkrasattri.
Those are the times on an empty road. Nearly every car heading to the airport from the south shares the same main road out, so rush hour and heavy rain stretch all of them together.
So how much margin should I add?
Our rule of thumb for a flight: if you will be on the road at rush hour or in a downpour, plan as if the drive takes twice as long. Outside those hours, the calm-traffic time plus a comfortable buffer is enough. Then add the car return and your airline's check-in close time.
What that means for the car
The last morning is not the time to discover the tank is low. Fill up the evening before, to the level you received the car at, and the drive to the airport becomes one uninterrupted run.
Pack the car the night before as well. Loading five suitcases into a minivan at the last minute is how a comfortable departure turns into a rush, and the first ten minutes of the drive are then spent in the stress of it.
The return itself is short but not instant. It is the same walk round the car as at handover, checking the body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel, and it happens before you go to check-in. We agree the time in the chat against your flight.
- Evening before — fill up, pack the car
- Leave with the margin — twice the calm time at rush hour or in rain
- At the airport — return inspection in the car park
- Then — check-in, with the airline's deadline in mind
Where the traffic builds up on the way
Three places account for most of the delays. From Kata, Karon and Rawai, the Chalong roundabout at rush hour stands still, and everything behind it waits. From Patong, the climb over the Kathu side on a weekday morning is slower than the rest of the drive. And on the approach to the airport itself, the traffic from the whole south funnels onto the same road north.
Knowing where those points are helps you choose the hour. If your flight lets you leave before or after the peak, you save more time than any short cut could.
Heavy rain deserves its own mention. A tropical downpour cuts visibility to a few car lengths, water sits across the lanes in the low spots, and everyone slows at once. If the sky looks dark on departure morning, leave with the rush hour margin even at a quiet hour.
ImportantDo not try to make up lost time on the hill roads before a flight. The passes out of Patong and Kata have tight bends and long descents, and a rushed drive there is the one way to miss the flight for a reason worse than traffic.
What about a very early or late-night flight?
Night is when the roads are emptiest, so the calm-traffic times usually hold. What changes is the light: the hill roads are unlit, and scooters often ride without a rear light, so the southern passes ask for a steady pace in the dark.
We take cars back at the airport at any hour. Send the flight time in the chat, and we set the return so it fits before check-in. For the car park and the handover itself, see parking at Phuket Airport, and for the return, return the car at the airport.
Driving to the airport on your first rental day?
If you are collecting someone rather than flying out, the same times apply in reverse. Leave early enough to park calmly in the terminal car park rather than circling outside arrivals.
And if you are only now planning the stay, the choice of area decides every airport run. From Bang Tao or Nai Yang the departure morning is relaxed; from Kata or Rawai it is a proper drive. For the whole island, see car rental in Phuket.
Returning a rental car before the flight
With a rental, the return in the terminal car park is part of the timing above, and the hour is written into the agreement. The pages on cheap car rental at Phuket Airport, minivan rental at Phuket Airport and luxury car rental at Phuket Airport cover collection and return for each type of car.

Common questions
How long does it take to drive from Patong to Phuket Airport?
About 40 to 45 minutes on the west road in calm traffic. On a weekday morning it takes longer, so leave with a margin.
How long is the drive from Kata to Phuket Airport?
About 50 minutes in calm traffic, one of the longest runs on the island. Rush hour and heavy rain add noticeably to it.
How much extra time should I allow at rush hour?
Our rule of thumb is to plan as if the drive takes twice as long. The Chalong roundabout and the road north both slow down at peak times.
When should I fill up before returning the car?
The evening before. Bring the car back at the fuel level you received it at, so the morning drive has no extra stops.
Do I need time for the car return before check-in?
Yes. The return inspection is the same walk round the car as at handover, and it happens before you go to check-in.
Which areas are closest to Phuket Airport?
Nai Yang is minutes away, Laguna about twenty minutes and Bang Tao about 25. They make the departure morning the easiest.
